Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in the year 2017 and was the number one streamed track in just 6 months. The song is a blend of reggaeton, pop and rock was not only a way to bring renewed interest to reggaeton but it was also an attraction to Latin music in general. The Billboard Top 100 featured two songs which were Spanish most of the time, and four more in 2016. During the height of Despacito's popularity, however 19 predominantly Spanish songs made it onto the Top 100 In 2020, there were 41 songs. In the wake of Justin Bieber's dual remix of Despacito (2017) popular artists soon began collaborating with reggaeton artists, including Drake with Bad Bunny on MIA (2018) as well as Madonna together with Maluma for Medellin (2019). At the time of 2020, some reggaeton artists were expressing displeasure at that the genre was moving towards mainstream. However, a younger generation including Rauw Alejandro wanted to continue the evolution of reggaeton. The genre often incorporated elements from electronic dance music in addition to other styles.
